HRH DOLON OF AMBER, ARD-RI N’ARGANNEL 15

The mission is blown all to hell. My only chance to salvage it is to take the path of excruciating honor. Not my favorite thing when my life is on the line. Still, if it works out, if we find conspirators and evidence, maybe it will be a PR triumph. In a different vein than originally intended, but I work with what I’ve got.

Too bad about the prince.

Hope Fanwen isn’t involved. I’d bet not.

That ‘Mr. B’ beat a hasty retreat rather than face me gives me a small measure of satisfaction. Conditional. He could have been merely choosing better ground. If he did anything to Fanwen, hopefully the Begman sorcerers will find it. They seem to be reasonably competent.

If I capture Mr. Bushwhacker elsewhere, does honor (and a desire for good PR) require me to let King Darren direct the lion’s share of the torture? Put the idea to Dad. He’ll want to extract everything he can first… A joint session, with Darren and a number of his wizards on hand to watch carefully, while Dad takes him apart personally, might be a good move. Tempting to just do it myself in Argannel where I have so much leverage.

Getting ahead of myself here.

Now, how did the riot start? Did Dad and Benedict give me tainted troops? Didn’t see any residue of a spell on them through the Lens, and a big group spell like that would leave something. My own people seem to be fine. Are my officers there in danger? Maybe. They’re warded, but Is Kargan in danger? Mr. Blowhard is out of their league. Crap, I’ll have to set wards against Logrus and Logrus-magick and shapeshifters on the whole damned camp myself.

Love the Oak. Maybe a finding-spell set on Dathan. Can’t ward against Begman-style sorcery, it’s everywhere.

Would any of Dad’s family competitors be involved? Don’t believe any of them are Logrus Masters, but I can call in favors and get a Logrus Master or two for a day. Need to have that talk with Toric. Even more questions for him now.

HRH DOLON OF AMBER, ARD-RI N’ARGANNEL 16

What a clusterfuck.

Warded the troops, warded the rooms --- I had me and my people camp out in my suite’s main room, buddy system and everything --- and got some sleep. Smythe woke me up saying that Desoto wanted to talk. Privately. Smythe didn’t like it but I agreed.

The attacking Amber troops had been questioned. All had been chosen by Joff and led by Sgt. Elgin. Elgin had died in the first rush. They’d expected the rest of the troops to join in.

Fanwen was still being examined. Her little sister Elisha hadn’t been disturbed. Dathan was missing.

And three Amberite ships full of troops had arrived. That looked great. I Trumped Dad and asked him why. He’d sent them to give me more force should I need it. And in case the Begmans decided they didn’t like us any more, we could install a puppet government and change their minds. Logical. I’d have thought of it myself if I weren’t concentrating on saving our reputations the other way. He seemed to know something about Joff. He didn’t like the idea of Fanwen being in command of Begma, even nominally. Said she was ‘trouble’. Girl gets around for a teenager. Tyndall (commander of the recently arrived forces) and Derek were ushered in. Desoto watched us brief each other. I introduced them to each other.

Later, privately, they told me about Maugrim’s sons, alive and dead, and their dealings with them. No match with He Who Must Be Killed Soon. Réné joined us, saying that Darren might make it and that the Begman physicians seemed to be competent.

Derek went into the bathroom and Trumped out from there after a couple of odd-sounding thumps. Tyndall got a Trump contact moments later. We have important things to do and you’re off gallivanting. Derek? Pull me through. Gone. Then Réné broke out laughing and Trumped away too.

I waited, contemplating hurting them. Tyndall Trumped me after a while. She said that Derek was doing a good deed for a friend. She hadn’t seen Réné. She didn’t ask to come through.

Derek didn’t answer his Trump.

Dad Trumped me for a briefing. Told him the PR efforts seemed to be working but all would hinge on the king’s reaction when he regained consciousness. I mentioned that Derek had Trumped out. Didn’t mention Tyndall; being Tyndall, she probably had a good reason. Réné was only semi-official and was, well, Réné. Prima donna artiste. Derek’s abilities could have been useful.

HRH Dolon of Amber, Ard-Ri N’Argannel seventeen

Tyndall did come back fairly soon but declined to say where she’d gone. Killed some time fencing with her. She’s better, I’m stronger.

King Darren regained consciousness and wanted to talk to me. He still looked like hell, of course, but was clear headed. He assured me that Begma would keep to the treaty with Amber. I assured him that we would do everything possible to find the assassin. Réné and Derek came in. Réné checked on the king’s condition, the king got tired and we left.

Derek claimed he fell in the toilet and got lost. Such wit. I maintained a blasé expression. It paid off – Derek cooperated in scanning the castle and found subtle threads of Chaos Magick all through the place. Some were decades old. The main nexus was Prince Dathan’s quarters. We couldn’t get permission to search them until the king woke up.

A red hawk came to me with a message. It didn’t say it was a private message, so I let it talk with the others in earshot. I have a message from your father. Prince Caine has escaped. Tell no one. Excellent. I turned to my cousins, ‘Right. You heard the bird --- tell no one.’

Réné Trumped someone silently, then muttered ‘--- he may be the person responsible for Fiona’s disappearance ---‘ and I was next to him, touching his shoulder. He cut the contact, but not before I got an image of David. Réné was moderately offended. I just smiled.

Derek wanted a Trump of Chuft from Réné. He also mentioned that Julian was looking for Rendell.

I got Tyndall to give, and Desoto to accept a security consultation.

Trumped Toric and asked him to start the wheels rolling for my audience with Suhuy. I asked him about Maugrim’s possible mate. He suggested Tellin Helgram, long ago, though they’d ended the relationship in a quarrel. She hadn’t been seen in quite some time. Not that anyone would check --- Maugrim was a recluse who killed uninvited guests.

Derek Logrused into Dathan’s office and then Trumped me in. I spell-tapped the lines. We informed the castle sorcerers of the lines on the royals and showed them how to detect them. Bit of a stir ensued as they traced and cut them.

A growling, Trump-like message: MY SONS. I AM COMING. I WILL KILL ALL OF YOU AND NOTHING CAN STOP ME. I WILL PROBABLY DIE MYSELF BUT I DON’T CARE ANYMORE. Maugrim? Probably.

Captain Desoto, shocked, asked ‘Who was that?’

‘I don’t know. I’ll try to find out.’

Derek Trumped Réné. ‘---- do you know anything about Donnal? ---- more the method.’

I Trumped Bleys. He hadn’t heard the message. He told me to return to Amber. I delayed. Trumped Robin, who had heard it. I told him my suspicions, and that Maugrim, by reputation, might be able to do it. He said he’d warn Tashy, tell Llewella and stay in Rebma. Trumped Julian and told him.

Apparently, the message reached all the Amberites of my generation and was heard by anyone else who happened to be near them.

Derek told me he’d Trumped Morrigan to warn her. She’d helped him escape from Maugrim’s citadel. Derek was deeply worried. He’d been insignificant to Maugrim. Two of Maugrim’s sons were dead and the last one fled.

Tyndall couldn’t contact Merlin.

I ran us – Rene, Derek and Tyndall graciously accompanied me -- back to Amber as fast as is possible in a ship.

Dad’s come around to my view vis-a-vis the Iron Fist / Velvet Glove strategies and the cousins. A certain amount of it, I’m sure, is that he doesn’t want all his sibs after him should cousins snuff it. He doesn’t really trust Rebma’s defenses and is more than a little chagrined that Robin and Tasha and so on don’t trust him enough to come in. At least not yet.

Did some more work on the Abyss Magic Futzing spell, contacted Toric – I’ve got an appointment with Suhuy tomorrow – and picked up some supplies from the manse. Dad was really upset I’d left the castle for a few minutes. I see his point but I don’t deal well with confinement. Self-knowledge is always good.

Dad sent up Marinne and Surieth v’Alae up to amuse me that evening, having apparently paid some attention to my dating habits. Charming women, both. Delightfully exhausting as a team.

HRH Dolon of Amber, Ard-Ri N’Argannel nineteen

Walked the Way from Hendrakeways to Thelbane I’d used before, long, weird stairs through blackness through vortexes and stylized mouths and all that. Classier than it sounds. Thelbane is an impressive edifice. I think I managed to refrain from gawking. Drew a lot of stares and dirty looks. At least I thought they were dirty looks. With some demonforms it’s hard to tell. Did my best Bleys impression – the Being the Center of Attention Is Only My Due walk and expression.

Suhuy climbed out of lava to greet me. It might have even been real lava, though it didn’t stick to him like the real thing should. I gave him the courtesy he rates and he was pleasant to me.

I explained the situation. He was cagey but let me know that Abyss Magick was frowned upon in the Courts. Nascent practitioners were persuaded to stop, generally by killing them. This kind of united action towards the common good ---in the Courts --- was an indicator of just how dangerous Abyss Magick really was to everyone. Suhuy thought I was lying or mistaken about Maugrim acting against Amber. He hadn’t done anything but kill everyone who approached his remote redoubt for ages. I thought he was right but instantly came up with my own hypothesis: Maugrim’s kids had started it. Isolated, young and feeling their power, they’d got involved in the outside, attacked my cousins and lost. And Maugrim wasn’t dealing with it gracefully. I tried it out on Suhuy and added what we knew about Tana Helgram. He still was disinclined to go out of his way to help. Amber was less than popular in the Courts. Many would see the extinction of my generation as a fine thing. If not for my upcoming connection with Hendrake, he wouldn’t have talked to me at all. I argued that killing Maugrim (the inspiration to all those would-be Abyss Mages) was in the best interests of the Courts. Better yet, we’d be doing the dirty work. Should Maugrim succeed in killing me and the others off Dad and the other grieving parents would doubtless stir up trouble, some of which might spill over on the Courts. Further, the King of Amber would owe Suhuy a favor and the Crown Prince would owe him a really big one. And that Dad and I wouldn’t tell anyone that Suhuy had lent any aid.

He bought it, and why not, it was all true, or might be. He gave me a box containing an amulet on a sturdy chain. Placed around an Abyss Mage’s neck, it would disrupt and contain Abyssal energies. It wasn’t the Abyssal Howitzer I was hoping for but I thanked Suhuy sincerely. He indicated that he’d explain it, if necessary, as a wedding gift. When I left I made sure to feign disappointment, anger and fear leaking out of a façade of indifference.

Showed the thing to Dad and discussed tactics. I favored massing us together and planning a group attack. Maugrim had demonstrated the ability to target us no matter where we were separately. I Trumped Tyndall to try to sell her on the idea of Belling our Cat. She was in town and I went through to her despite Dad’s misgivings. I was in the Glaive & Goblin with Tyndall, David, Morrigan, Chuft and another cat-person. Dave in particular was deeply suspicious as I argued for gathering together. Apparently he’d been in a dungeon for a time. Eventually he and others required Dad to swear to protect and not imprison any of my generation without giving them a full day’s warning that their status had changed. Trumping the others, we couldn’t get through to Alix, Ikoma or Tashara. Robin opted to stay in Rebma. Réné and Gerard joined us during the communications attempts.

Réné reported that Fiona’s fortress was gone leaving a crater and that Dworkin had told him that he thought Corwin had made a mistake with Abyss Magick. Fiona had contacted her son via the Hall of Mirrors and answered three questions. She was alive and not damaged beyond repair. The one Réné though opposed him could assist him in finding her with a part of her. As she looked up at him she could see that that which was hers held she whom he sought. Ray said that Dworkin expected that Fiona would be lost to us. I suggested that Bob, Fi’s familiar or construct, might be the key. Ray showed Dad his Trump of Dworkin. It showed Venetian blinds that occasionally opened up to show Great-Gramps. Dad put it down fast.

Dave displayed some Trumps. One was of Terrence, son of Maugrim. One was Tana Helgram. One was Maugrim himself. One was of Drake, dead son of Maugrim. He’d taken them off Donald’s corpse.

We adjourned to a soundproofed room to plan. Tyndall accepted the amulet reluctantly, thinking I meant her to be the vanguard. I said no, that we had to distract Maugrim to give her a chance with the amulet. Managed to tick off Morrigan without meaning to.

Slept and woke suddenly in an almost identical room containing a purple iris in a vase beside the bed and a blizzard pounding at the window.

Crap. At least Tyndall has the amulet. I hope.

DOLON, UP CLOSE session 20

Dolon, on his knees, leaning against the wall. I really should chop Maugrim up. Get up. Do it. OK, maybe it can wait a minute.

He turned his attention inward, assessing. Some ribs, deep bruises all over my back, minor but widespread burns. Possible concussion. Crap. Heh. In better shape than the Lord of Darkness there. First Aid spell for me. That’ll tell me if I can manage the Major Surgery spell… it won’t help Derric… probably… shapeshifting is weird… but Morrigan might need it if she’s still breathing. Not something I can do to myself in any case.

Stupid son of a bitch underestimated us. Barely. Of course it never occurred to me that anyone could successfully impersonate Dad, not and fool me. Despite the fact that Ancarath told me about master shapeshifters. So --- how long has this been going on? Let’s see. Joff. The trip to Begma was designed to eliminate me, the heir. That neat trick with blocking Trump use in Amber --- Abyss Sorcery? Certainly since ‘Dad’ decided to bring the cousins together. Likely that Dad is still imprisoned and has been ever since Eric/Random hit him with the lightning bolt.

Am I the Crown Prince? I could argue it both ways. Maugrim did pull off a coup and did name me his heir. Heh. Maybe I should claim his properties. I am, or will be once I get to Amber, the man who commands Dad’s troops. The Avernans at least. Religious fanatics --- my favorites. But my responsibility until Dad shows up. If he’s alive. So. Pass the grenade to Benedict and pull the troops out as soon as he doesn’t need them. Offer him their services for a week, not that he’ll need them. Then look for Dad, Fiona and Corwin. And heal up. And fix the frigging Oak.

A nice plan. The Hendrakes will be annoyed, but screw ‘em. Probably shouldn’t let out that Maugrim was King of Amber for a while. The Courts might not think badly of us, ‘cause we killed the bastard where they failed for the last few millennia, but the Golden Circle folk --- and our own --- don’t know that.

Weird that Bronwyn thinks she’s our favorite ‘niece’. Someone’s made her believe she’s, what, from the future. Time Travel is against my religion, so it has to be faked. Got the impression she thinks I’m the Regent or King or something. Seems like a nice kid but I can’t believe none of my cousins checked her memories directly. Bunch of wussies. Good thing Brian is dead. I’d have to turn the murdering piece of shit over to the Begmans.

Gotta get up and slice up the corpse. And freeze it. Separate the bits in to several piles and burn them separately. Damned shapeshifters. Damned Abyss magic.

[Explanation: Maugrim impersonated Bleys for a while. The group met Bronwyn, the kid from Dolon's vision, who sort of lurked in the walls of the place. She referred to our heroes as her uncles and aunts -- her Mommy had said it was OK. 'Bleys'-Maugrim attacked the assembled room of pcs, starting with Derrec, who got his skin dissolved by a wave of Abyss Magic. Tyndall's daggers were deflected. Morrigan slammed the heavy door on Maugrim, trapping him half in and out (bottom half in), then stabbed a leg. Tyndall daggered a foot. Dolon collapsed the stone roof in the hall on Maugrim with a spell. Dolon tossed Dave his blasting wand (Dave knew how to use it) and teleported into the hall, 50 feet up. Tyndall and Morrigan dodged another wave of Abyss Magic. Dolon hit the wave with his Abyssal Disruptor spell and it stalled into a really dangerous vortex. Dolon dove into the cross corridor, evading a BIG lightning bolt. Tyndall necklaced Maugrim -- no effect (he'd already switched it out). One of Morrigan's arrows got through. Dolon's defensive spells let him survive a wave of fire down his dead-end corridor, barely. Tyndall and Morrigan engaged Maugrim with swords. Dolon charged in to help. Dave zapped Maugrim. Everybody got hurt pretty bad and Maugrim got dead. In the meantime Rene had been trying something with Trumps.]

MASK OF CHAOS FINALE

[I didn't write this up at the time --- the campaign was over. So, working from my notes many moons later...]

Tyndall and I looted Maugrim's corpse then dismembered it very, very thoroughly. I froze the bits with liquid nitrogen and smashed the bits to tiny bits. David checked on Morrigan. She came to and punched him. Derric shambled over to us.

A familiar voice spoke up behind me, "Have you considered burning?" Maugrim's voice.

"That's was next," I said turning. Another Maugrim.

"Good. That should disrupt the matrix."

"What matrix would that be... sir?"

"The shapeshifting matrix of course. Holding him in another form. Mine."

"Who was that then?"

"Well, if you would --" Maugrim Two made shooing motions. We backed off.

M2 knealt by the bits and sniffed. "I didn't think so. There doesn't seem to be any temporal displacement."

Tyndall and Dave moved cautionsly closer.

Maugrim looked earnestly at them, "It wasn't me, of course."

"Temporal displacement?" I asked. Dave started to point the wand. I gestured, cool it.

M2 dismissed them and started gesturing over M1's remains.

I walked away, muttering sotto voce, "Lets just get out of here in one piece."

Dave backed into the room, still pointing the wand. Derrec Trumped someone.

"I think he may be telling the truth," I said to the others, "If that was a second rate copy..."

"Then we're in trouble," Tyndall finished.

"Only if we piss him off."

Tyndall knocked on a wall panel and called Rene and Bronwyn out. "We killed the fake Maugrim and now the real one's here."
