Brave New World is the campaign's reset.

Most or all shadows that weren't at least partially independent of the Pattern were wiped out of existance by a cataclysm of Shadowstorms. So far it appears that even Amberites who happened to be in vulnerable shadows died. Conditions in the Courts are uncertain but Brand says he witnessed the Serpent of Chaos going berserk on Thelbane. How much damage the cataclysm did to the shadows of the Courts is unknown.

Surviving worlds or world-clusters do not border each other. They are like islands in a sea of highly charged potential until linked up by Pattern initiates.
