ROYAL SUCCESSION Each King or Queen generates a number (usually a large number) of spawn. Recognized spawn live pretty much as they wish, limited by the King's favor and vicious internal politics. They are not allowed to produce spawn of their own, a thing the King regulates by use of his Crown.

In theory, a dying King will name a successor, or a slate of possible successors, who inherit if confirmed by the Succession Council -- dukes, the Hierophant and others chosen by the King. This has actually happened exactly once.

What usually happens is the King dies unexpectedly, or dies snarling and refusing to name a successor. Then the Dukes pick favorites and war decides the succession.

Newly crowned Kings typically have most or all of their siblings executed.
